Week 5 In Charter Oak

Hello everyone!! I hope this letter finds you all happy and well! Here is the happenings of week 5 in Charter Oak!

1. We got to help a family out with their house and cleaning it... we were there for about 4 or 5 hours... Wow. It was SUPER clean when we left! I was SUPER excited about that :]

2. We are teaching this boy Josh. He has a less active mother and a brother on a mission and another brother with his mission call. We went over to his house for our lesson and the garage door was open and no one was answering the door. We called the moms cell phone, no answer, we leave a message. She calls us back as soon as Josh rolls up on his bike. He tells us that his dogs are lost and he has been out for 20 minutes looking for them. Meanwhile my companion is hearing the same thing from his mom on the phone. We told him we will help look but asked if we could pray first. Sister Robison is saying the prayer... while she is praying I hear a car honk and then some dogs barking. I start thinking... we need to go to that barking. While she is thinking which I later found out that we needed to go to the car honking... we say Amen and Josh goes, "Theres the dogs" We turn around and the car was his mom honking at 2 people who found the dogs right at the side of his road... HELLO! Quickest answer to a prayer I ever had! It was a great way to bring the spirit for the lesson we had. I think it made him more attentive during it.

3. I gave blood for our Stake Blood Drive... 5 minutes, 16 seconds

4. Our district meeting was REALLY good this week! We were talking about needing to open our mouth! Simple right? :]Scripture that I liked with it is D&C 24:12

5. We had a man call us this week, Michael. He had been given a tour of the chapel but nothing came of it. He calls us this week and says, "I want to come to church this Sunday and read the Book of Mormon." What?! It was AWESOME! He had a lesson with him on Saturday and he went to the Adult FHE in our ward on Monday... we shall see what happens. He seems  a little different but sincere.

6. We had our first meal with a member yesterday!! My first legal meal with a member! :] They have changed the rule now and we can eat with members! It will be weird to me because I don't know any different. But I am exited to get in and meet the members!

7. Favorite scriptures this week... 2 Nephi 9: 52-53 We have to remember the words of God and remember how great the covenants of the Lord are... it was nice to read and then really think about how great it feels to have made and keeping those covenants. And 2 Nephi 11:4-5 My soul delighted in proving to people about Christ and the covenants again... How blessed I am!!

LOVE YOU!!

ALOT of Studying This Week

Hello everyone!! Well this week was pretty uneventful. My companion was sick and so I got to study a lot. But this is the happenings...

1. Well I got to drive to Glendale (my old area) on Tuesday... There is where t doctors office is. Umm we got lost on the way there BUT my awesome navigation skills got us un lost and to the doctor! Pretty much told her she had a sinus infection and gave her antibiotics. We then went home for the rest of the week.
2. My companion started getting sick Saturday... till about Friday when we went to one appointment. it just helped me study...
3. I watched ALL the DVDs we have to watch for lessons. From Joy to the World to The Testaments. There was a lot but now I will know which ones with help those we teach.
4. I decided I am going to finish Jesus the Christ before I g home... I am on Chapter 5. It is heavy reading for me so I only read a few pages at a time :]
5. I finished True to the Faith and Our Search for Happiness
6. Started Our Heritage...
7. LOTS of scriptures-LOVED
8. Speaking of... my favorite scriptures this week are in 2 Nephi 4. Verse 15-16 My soul really does "delighteth in the scriptures" It was a little blessing for me to be able to just engross in my studies this week while my companion was sick. And verse 34-"O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever. ..." Amen. I do have my faith and trust in the Lord which helps bring comfort to me in everyday struggles.
9. Well we had a lesson with an AMAZING woman this week who has over come smoking recently, and started coming to church every Sunday, reading her scriptures and praying everyday and meeting with us to gain more of a gospel knowledge to got ot the temple. She had an AWESOME experience. On Monday night at adult FHE the subject was tithing and she felt really bad because she wasn't paying it and her husband is not a member. She talked to her husband and he said, "Make sure you pay it on time every month and I can get the tax write-off" She was so happy she gets the chance to m=now pay her tithing. It was GREAT! I love watching peoples testimonies grow right in front of me!
10. We got a new investigator this week! He name is Josh. His mother is less active but we met with him last night and HE made the appointment for us to come back on Wednesday! One of his older brother's is on a mission and the other has his call and is preparing to go. It is pretty cool to watch him change and want to read the scriptures and meet with us to follow in his brothers footsteps like he all should with our oldest brother, the Savior.
11. We were told about "The end of the world" on Saturday. Really?! Sounded stupid but it was VERY advertised here in CA.

LOVE YOU ALL!!

I'm Running Out of Good Headings!

Here we go again... My third week in Charter Oak!

1. We went to an adult FHE... We had the lesson. We went because a lot of less active people go to this FHE and not church... whats that about? ANYWAY we were about to visit and make appointments with them and Sister Robinson sang a BEAUTIFUL song!
2. We got to teach the Barraja's again this week. The mom and the 8 and 7 year old came like normal but also her son Hector who is 13. We had a GREAT lesson on the atonement and the 3 parts of it. During some tangent or something 8 year old Maya starts talking to her brother. She says, "Do you want to be baptized? Because I want to be. That's why I come here to learn and go to church. So are you going to be baptized?" She said it with the most sincere attitude I have EVER heard! He said he would be at the next lesson so we will see.
3. I got NEW SHOES!! LOVE them! Thanks mom and dad!!
4. We also got to meet with Sister Goeble, a less active. We did the Christlike Attributes in Preach My Gospel. She said she was lacking in the reading her scriptures part and because of that she was lacking in so many other areas. She pieced it all together on how when out scripture study is missing, other parts of our lives begin to lack.
5. We had Zone Conference this week. The last one with President Pike. It was AWESOME!! Some things I learned: "Obedience brings blessings, exact obedience brings miracles." In 2 Nephi 31 is states the Gospel of Jesus Christ 5 TIMES! Must be important... And "Have confidence in yourself because Heavenly Father has confidence in you"
6. Favorite quote of the week at least is, "NEVER let your faith be difficult to detect" J. Ruben Clark
7. Favorite scripture of the week is, 1 Nephi 17:50. What trust Nephi had to say that. To make the water to be Earth?! I love it. We HAVE to have trust in the Lord. I have learned that many times on my mission.

LOVE YOU ALL!!

I Got To Call Home!

Hello everyone!! It was AMAZING to see you yesterday!!!! LOVED it!! There isn't too much that I didn't tell you about so today will be a little shorter of a letter :]

1. We had an investigator come to church!! Mary. She wasn't able to stay all three hours but she said that the sacrament made her feel happy and that she is trying to quit smoking and she thinks this will help.
2. We met with Vince again this week. And asked him what he wanted from meeting with us since it has been a LONG time with missionaries. We committed him to pray about it, including the Book of Mormon again. We shall see this week how it is going for him.
3. We went to visit 6 people in this one RV park. First of all the place was HUGE and like a fancy RV place. Secondly, the numbers don't go in order. Third we spent 2 hours and only saw two people... BUT it was good! one of them being a less active who set up an appointment with us for this week!
4. Sadly I found out one of the sisters that I came out with went home a week ago. She got really sick and went home. I feel so bad for her. She was really a great missionary!
5. Calling home was AMAZING!! I'm SO lucky to know most updates but I haven't seen you so it was fun to see and hear your voices! I miss being able to laugh and hear you. Sounds silly but its true.
6. I got to meet a TON of ward member yesterday since it was my first time to the ward... they seem nice but there is a LOT of work to do... I'm excited to be here and hopefully I am up for the challenge :]
7. Favorite scriptures this week... 1 Nephi 15:8, 10-11 In verse 8 I love how simply it is put, "And I said unto them: Have ye inquired of the Lord?" How often do we forget to pray about it first? I remember mom ALWAYS saying, "Have you prayed about it?" Then in verse 11 we are promised, "these things shall be made known unto you." We HAVE to pray. Plain and simple.
8. Next favorite scripture this week... 1 Nephi 16:23 Nephi's bow breaks... his family INCLUDING his father murmur. Nephi sees the problem and fixes it. We have to be like this. We see the problem and think about how sad it is or ask "why me?" When in reality, we need to ask for guidance in how to fix it and then actually do it! LOVE IT!

Well this past week was pretty good but I am looking forward to this week to be even better! LOVE YOU ALL!!

L. Tom Perry is in town!

I will get to the big heading but I will start off with the beginning of the week :]

1. Like I said last week, I am now in Charter Oak! It is between Covina and Glendora if you want to look at a map :] I LOVE it!!
2. It is a new area which I am DRIVING in... weird. BUT there are a lot of people we aer working with and it is SUPER exciting! This week has been FULL of miracles! That I didn't really know about until my companion said it because I didn't know any better. Some of them being...
3. We got to help Jessica with her MATH homework. The first miracle was me actually remembering the math o help her but the second was that SHE brought up the Book of Mormon and what she read and questions! It was AWESOME!
4. We taught the Word of Wisdom to Jamie... she wants to live it but talked about her love for Dr. Pepper and a frap at McDonald's... WELL anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE Dr. Pepper and that there is a Diet Dr. Pepper CAFFEINE FREE! And there are Starbucks drinks like she like WITH OUT the coffee. She was so excited to live the word of wisdom and learn there are substitutes! Made my day for sure!
5. Peggy is a lady that multiple sisters have tried to set up lessons with, we went, she let us in, we got to say prayer and share a lesson and she invited us back to teach her!! She has had her records removed from the church but maybe her heart has been softened!
6. Joseph and Mary (No not Christ parents) They were a referral from some Elders and other sister have not gotten anything besides an open door once... We knocked, opened up and let us in, talked, we had a lesson and THEY asked us to come on a tour of the chapel! Joseph we found out is a member and hasn't been to church since he was about 15... he is probably 35? I'm SUPER excited to teach them! They have 2 daughters too.

Miracles... AMAZING!!! More things...

7. We went to visit a new family in the ward... AWKWARD!! We took a member with us and it was pretty much a marriage counseling session.. BUT we got to fit in a GREAT lesson about prayer!
8. I got to be part of Mormon Helping hands on Saturday! It was pretty fun! We went to a park and we painted curbs and railings. All the activities included painting curbs, railings, cleaning trails, trees, random things, it was FUN!

Now for the big heading...

9. We got to see L. Tom Perry!! The Arcadia and the LA mission got together for one big meeting. It was AWESOME!! Elder Clayton from the 70 was there too! What I learned... in the Bible Dictionary it says, "Prayer is a form of work and is an appointed  means for obtaining the highest of all blessings." and "The Lord doesn't let us off the hook so be prepared" It was AMAZING to be able to be 10 FEET away from an apostle! The Spirit was just so reconfirming. LOVE IT!!
10. I got to have another stake conference! Keith B. McMullin was there from the Presiding Bishopric... WHOA! he talked about how there is a difference between a member of the church and a latter day saint. i don't know how to explain it but pretty much a member just goes to church but a latter day saint really thinks about the sacrament and wants to learn and improve when we go to church.
11. I have such a love for the temple which I heard about from each speaker I heard this week and got to teach too. GREAT quote from President Monson, " If you have not yet been to the temple or if you have been but currently do not qualify for a recommend, there is no important goal or you to work toward than being worthy to go to the temple. Your sacrifice may be bring in your life into compliance with what is required to receive a recommend, perhaps by forsaking long-held habits which disqualify you. it may be having the faith and the discipline to pay your tithing. Whatever it is, qualify to enter the temple of God. Secure a temple recommend and regard it as a precious possession, for such it is."

I LOVE the work and the Gospel!!! So happy I get to be here in Chater Oak! LOVE YOU!!

9. We got to teach YW on Sunday about the Priesthood... WHOA! I LOVE the priesthood!! What a blessing to be able to have it in my life through dad, brothers, and friends.
10. I got to have my last meal in Glendale with the Corrigans. Same people that i LOVE and got to have my first meal ever in Glendale with. They are so GREAT! And since we aren't supposed to eat with members... they called the mission office who talked to President Pike and got permission for us to come over!
11. I got TRANSFERRED! I will now be serving in the Carter Oaks Ward with Sister Robison. I'm nervous but SUPER stoked! Glendale has been home to me for 4 1/2 months... But this will be GREAT!! I LOVE being a missionary!!
12. Favorite scripture of the week... Moroni 7:45-46. Main part I LOVE is, "if you have not charity, ye are nothing..." Nothing. I don't want to be nothing. Though charity is hard sometimes it is ALWAYS needed. I know there are people I just have to love so I don't think about my "nothingness"

I LOVE YOU!!

6. We got to attend a funeral with a less active family to another church... whoa. The pastor that they had to pay for was pretty much promoting a new English congregation the whole time... i just wanted to stand up and say, "this is not about you right now buddy."
7. There was a Relief Society activity which was a Passover Seder... WOW! AMAZING!! it really opened my eyes about the Passover and what Jewish people celebrate. But more so that what they celebrate and the symbolism they use... is really all back to Christ and the Sacrament. It was AMAZING!
8. The art exhibit was GREAT!!  It was presented SO BEAUTIFUL!! And the art was WONDERFUL! I LOVED it! We also got to hear the Southern Mormon Tabernacle choir-AWESOME!! It was just a GREAT event!
9. Favorite scripture for the week...Mormon 9:20 'And the reason why he ceaseth to do miracles among the children of men is because that they dwindle in unbelief, and depart from the right way, and know not the God in whom they should trust." We can see miracles EVERYDAY if we believe... we just have to put that trust in our heavenly Father and he will bless us :]

LOVE YOU!!!

First Temple Trip in LA

Hello everyone!! Well here goes for the week!! It was a BUSY one!

1. Last Monday we got to play DODGE BALL! I think some of the elders had some aggression for their companions... HILARIOUS! It was REALLY fun and then I got to play ONE game of basketball. I miss having a companion that likes to play basketball hahaha Oh well, I was lucky with one :]
2. We got to have a lesson with Daniel about the plan of salvation again with his mom and grandma which went REALLY good! The grandma had just lost her brother shew as really close to and maybe it will help them get back on the right track of going to church so they can have those blessings of seeing him again.
3. We took a couple on a tour of the chapel... AWESOME!! We went from an "I can't come to church Sunday" to a "IF we came can we talk about it afterwards" -They didn't end up coming BUT it is still a start to something I think. Since we first had contact with him New Years Eve and he JUST came on the tour. I love them though and the gospel is what they need and want... We just have to be able to teach they that :]
4. The Armenian elders gave us a referral for a lady named Barbara... she told the elders and us when we stopped by that she will do anything to live with her husband (died in October) and God again... HELLO! We have got the plan for her! :] She keeps rescheduling our appointments but it will happen... I hope she can find peace in it!
5. We have been handing out fliers like CRAZY for an AWESOME art exhibit they are having in our stake for all religions. Different people are bringing in their art work of Christ and then different choirs and on Sunday the Southern California Mormon Tabernacle Choir is coming!! I'm excited!! But we were given a box of 1000 fliers... we probably only have 300 left... maybe...
6. Interviews with President Pike where this week... I cried. I don't even know why hahah He is such a good man! The new president will have some big shoes to fill!
7. We got to watch "On the Lord's Errand" (yes, I may have pushed for us to watch it thanks to Paul :) WOW! Watch it if you haven't yet! SOOO good! President Monson is amazing! I just hope I can be HALF as in tune as he is!
8. I got to have an early Birthday lunch with the Stapels- LOVE THEM!! They even got me a really cute tote bag! They are so sweet! I wish they would just come to church now... We are still teaching them the lessons, one principle at a time :]
9. I got to go to the temple TODAY!! WOW! I LOVE the temple!! LA temple is HUGE first of all but I really took for granted the ability to go once a week since now I only get to go every 6 MONTHS! But it was great! I LOVE the spirit that is felt there!
10. Favorite scripture of the week... 3 Nephi 9:13 "... Behold, mine arm of mercy is extended towards you, ..." His arms are extended... now all we have to do is reach out for them.

I LOVE you all!! And I hope you all are doing GREAT!!

Conference Recap

Hello everyone!! Here are the weeks happenings...

1. I went to Chinatown again last Monday... I ate CHICKEN FEET!! Way weird.
2. We had a FHE with a lady in the ward who does voice over work... what you might know her from is Rugrats! She is Angelica! Super nice lady and she has a friend that might be interested so we will see how that goes...
3. We had a service project with a sister in the ward. We got to teach her how to sew! She got a brand new sewing machine and so I got to help her get to know it and how to sew! It was WAY FUN!
4. We are meeting with a sister who has an art class and has talked to one of the ladys that comes to her class about the gospel. We went last week and will go again this week to get to know her and slip in the gospel but while we go we get to learn how to draw!! SO FUN! Missionary work and drawing!
5. One of the couple we teach made us some no bake cookies... she said her sons called them Gorilla Poo Cookies :] We had a really good lesson with them and i just LOVE being able to teach!!
6. The weather here has been NICE!! I am starting to really see the Sunny California! It was 96 degrees this week... it was hot while knocking.
7. So we go to a assisted living home and play piano for the people there and we know one of the patients. Anyway, we went this week and while Sister Beazer plays I usually talk to the different people there... well it was awkward this week. I pretty much got hit on the whole time-now I am not saying this because I know I'm awesome or anything but whoa. It was awkward.
8. Conference!! WHOA! I LOVED IT!! We got to watch the 4 sessions! A few favorites... Lynn G. Robbins-To be or Not to be. I really liked how he pointed out there are to do lists we can cross off but then To Bee lists that we are to work on ALL the time and then to ask ourselves, who do I want to be? Dieter F. Uchtdorf-Preach the gospel at all times and use words if necessary. We are always being watched and being examples of the church.
9. We also had a really go district meeting this week and were really able to help each other with some ideas of what we can do to help our investigators or find some investigators
10. Scripture study this week... Helaman 5. Typical, I know but in verse 12 it talks about the foundation of Christ which we heard about during conference and I LOVE when it says, WHEN the devil shall send for his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, WHEN all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have NO power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo,... The devil is going to come and try to drag us down but if we have that foundation... he cant. What a blessing!! We just need to remember that now when the storms come :]

I LOVE this work and all of you!! I hope you are all doing well!!

Adventure!

Hello all!! Here goes the adventures of the week past...
1. We had a FHE with a family in the ward and we had the lesson then Sister Beazer was talking to the mom because they are both from Canada and I was playing with the kids. A 7 and 4 year old... umm I got Karate Chopped like 20 times lol it was SO fun! But don't worry I was in the same room with both parents and companion.
2. A older couple that we teach... I just LOVE them! I feel like I am going to Grandmas house every time we go. She always has a little something for us and just LOVES to talk about the gospel. Its GREAT!
3. We got to do service this week! We gardened like 4-5 hours this week! Like SERIOUS weeds EVERYWHERE! We might go back to actually plant...
4. We had a meeting with President Pike this week we learned a few things like...
5. We get to go to the Temple on April 12th!! I'm REALLY excited! And...
6. L.Tom Perry is coming!! The LA and Arcadia missions will be coming together to have a meeting with him! What a blessing!! I'm SUPER stoked!!
7. We went to a Assisted living home for Sister Beazer to play piano... WOW! I think I needed it more than the people there. They loved it but I forget how much music soothes the soul. It was GREAT!
8. It has been raining a LOT here! I keep thinking I'm back in WA but then I just realize I am happier to be working in rain than 120 degree weather
9. I found a quote I LOVE out of "Our Search for Happiness" It is... "An interesting things happens whenever you attempt to place your feet in Christ's footsteps. If you really concentrate on trying to walk the way He walked-loving, caring, serving, and obeying each step of the way-one day you'll look up and discover that his path had led you directly to the throne of God. For that is and ever has been his great purpose and mission: to lead us to our Heavenly Father so we can dwell with Him in His heavenly home." How comforting... Now we just need to walk that way... the hard part :]
10. The work is still hard... but we are trying and working with a few less actives to help bring them back which is GREAT! I LOVE being a missionary!

LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU TONS!!

Rainy CA!

Hello All!! Well here goes the past week!!

1. We got to have a lesson with a couple in our ward that is preparing to go to the temple! They are hilarious and ask lot of questions so it was great! I think the wife is more worried but I think that tonight helped calm her nerves a little bit.
2. A less active lady that we teach added my companion and I on Face book and she said that we looked at our pictures... its weird to think that she has now seen me in not Sunday clothes hahaha
3. We knocked a LOT this week... that's pretty normal. BUT we knocked into a man that we pretty nice and said he would call... again this is pretty normal. The NOT normal part was that he called!! he called the next day and asked to go on a church tour! We had a tour, had the restoration lesson, extended the baptismal commitment... he ACCEPTED!! And we set up a lesson for a couple days later, he came and he also came to a ward activity! Its great! He planned on coming to church wasn't able to make it but he called and told us and then set up an appointment for this week! It is nice to be teaching someone! He is a little slower at all the information so we are breaking the lessons up but it is GREAT!! I hope that he can keep progressing and be able to make the promise with heavenly Father!
4. We also had a lesson with our ten year old boy... it was a good lesson on Faith but what stuck the most out to me was his prayer. He prayed to understand the Book of Mormon better when he reads it and then he asked for the "Good ghost" meaning the Holy ghost... it was really cool!
5. As we were out knocking we saw a group of kids playing and we asked them if there parents were home which they said no. (oddly that is common... not safe) We gave them a card to give to their parents and then I asked them if they wanted a picture of Christ with Children they are were like YEAH! So we gave them the pass along card of a picture of Christ with Children and the Article of Faith of the back...
6. We had a ward activity that we were able to go to since we had an investigator with us. It was a St. Scotty's Day celebration. It was fun! They had a mash potato and pudding bar. Then caber toss (Hilarious watching all the men try to beat each other) and a jello eating contest... It was fun and I think our investigators liked it too...
7. We got to go to the Elders baptism for Anette. My companion and I did the presentation in between the actual baptism and the welcoming to the ward. Sister Beazer played the piano and I read from Joseph Smith History. It was REALLY cool! Spirit was really strong.
8. The work is going... I'm tired every night so that is a good sign right? :]

LOVE YOU ALL!!

Sister Arbogast

Transfer to....

Here we go!! Start officially of my third transfer and I will be serving in... GLENDALE!! Again... LOVE IT! :]
1. The weather has been GREAT!! Well hot but glad it is done raining for the most part :] It has been about mid 80's usually...
2. We get to teach this older couple that cant come to church and we had the first lesson with them on Tuesday... WHOA! Brother is REALLY hard of hearing! I felt so bad. I am going to make an outline next time so he can just follow along with us as we read and talk... They are a SUPER sweet couple!
3. I got some cards laminated for teaching the lesson so it will be easier to visualize as we teach... I think I might like them more than my companion but oh well the investigators and people we teach say they like them :]
4. We were out knocking (naturally) and we knocked into a lady that told us all about "smart meters" like for water... Apparently they are really bad and if you are within 10 feet you will get the radiation that they give off... umm HELLO! We talk next to them on the sidewalks everyday! Oh well... I have come to California on the Lord's Errand. I should be good right? :]
5. We got to watch the Prophet of the Restoration movie this week with a less active and WOW! It was AWESOME!! It is the one that they show in the theater place in Salt Lake... Anyway, it was a GREAT testimony builder again of Joseph. Love him!
6. Our ward had a Relief Society Birthday dinner this week. It was really nice! We helped prepare all the food and them we had a less active come and got to meet a few non-members that people had brought so that was nice!
7. I got SUPER sick this week. It really sucked but oh well. I got to push on right? :]

10. We have a new Senior couple in the office and the Sister is now in charge of mail... yeah all my mail was sent to the other side of the mission this past week but I got it all last night... we shall see how things go this week...
11. Transfer calls were Saturday and like I said before I will be staying in the Glendale 2nd ward! I love the members and we have been working with a TON of less actives. One day all those knocking hours will pay off :]
